Marjorie Spevak All-City Music Festival
The 2023 Marjorie Spevak All City Middle School Music Festival Program will be held in early April at Drake University.
This event is possible thanks to the generosity of Marjorie Spevak
Music has played a prominent role in Marjorie Spevak’s life, beginning back in her days at Greenwood Elementary School. In the 1930’s the New York Philharmonic Orchestra would broadcast a monthly children’s concert, and her father suggested to the principal that the children gather in the auditorium to listen to this concert. When he was informed that Greenwood school had no radio, her father rallied other Greenwood parents in raising enough money to provide this enriching musical education for students. This was just the beginning for Mrs. Spevak’s involvement with music, which blossomed into the active role that she has played in such prominent organizations as the Civic Music Association of Des Moines and the Des Moines Symphony. Her great joy and love of music has prompted her to share this love with the students of the Des Moines Public Schools. Tonight, we wish to thank Mrs. Spevak for her generous contribution in making this evening’s performance possible.
In 2019 the name of the Festival was officially changed to honor Marjorie and her contributions to DMPS. Please enjoy the link to the article below.
